Character Analysis Of Scrooge In A Christmas Carol

Mr. Ebenezer Scrooge in Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol is a stubborn character that insists on his lone, grumpy life. His outlook on life had been skewed ever since his beautiful fiancà © Belle left him after she saw his love of money and wealth only growing. Scrooge lost the love of his life to greed yet he still holds tightly to it. Although many in his life have extended a warm hand to show him love and kindness, he has rejected it coldly. As Scrooge’s narcissistic and selfish attitude only grow with time, three Christmas ghosts decide that they need to intervene to repair the damage that had been done before it was too late and would face his sentence after death. As Scrooge is settled into his quaint, miserable, life, he soon†¦show more content†¦Scrooge believes that those with little are that way because they are lazy or do not work for themselves instead of having compassion for them. Even the Christmas season does not spur him to give anything at all. Scrooge is met by three Christmas ghosts to take him on a journey through time in order for him to acquire the perspective he desperately needs before his death comes and determines his fate. Because of his severe bitterness and desire to be alone, the Christmas ghosts visit him to try to change his outlook on life to become a better man. The use of time travel through dreams enhances Scrooges senses and enables him to see Christmases past in a new light making Scrooge reluctantly sad about where he has come from and how happy Belle is without him. The second and third visits each resulted in another trip which begins to open Scrooges eyes to allow him to see how poorly he has treated others around him in the past. The journey through the times requires emotion energy which Scrooge displays that takes a toll on him. The narrator explains Scrooge’s experiences as childlike; â€Å"It was a strange figure—like a child: yet not so like a child as like an old man, vie wed through some supernatural medium, which gave him the appearance of having receded from the view, and being diminished to a childs proportions† (2.20).
